Typically after a skin surgery we ask that patients limit activity for the first 48 hours. Be sure to leave dressing in place for 24 hours before removing it. Its ok to shower after 24 hours but we recommend not soaking or swimming. A helpful tip to removing the dressing is to remove it in the shower, it helps to loosen the dressing without disturbing the area. Be sure to apply Vaseline to the area daily using a q-tip. Continue doing this for 1 week or until sutures are removed. Then apply a clean bandage and repeat this process daily. If the area starts to bleed, apply firm pressure to the area for at least 20 minutes without peeking at the area. You can use acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain. Avoid aspiring and NSAIDS as these can thin the bloog and cause more bleeding. If you notice red streaks coming from the wound, have a fever, worsening pain, or have pus draining from the would please call our office immediately. Open wounds however, will have some redness and small amount of drainage, this is a normal part of the healing process.
